Two handwritten letters from Thomas Cushing to an acquaintance mostly concerning the activities of his son, Frank Hamilton
Cushing, who has friendly relations with Native Americans and tribes in New Mexico and Colorado. In the first letter (2 p.),
dated July 18, 1881, on the letterhead stationery of W.W. Munsell & Co. in New York City, Cushing notes that his son has been
in New Mexico and Colorado and has been invited into tribal areas "as a Zuni chief" and even calls the head chief "his adopted
father." In the second letter (3 p.), dated July 16, 1882, on the letterhead stationery of Philadelphia publisher Louis H.
Everts [i.e. Everts and Peck], Cushing is in Philadelphia and writes that his son is in Washington with "two of his brother
chiefs." He hopes to be able to travel with his son Frank to "Glen Iris", to meet with Letchworth, "not the least the large
hearted friend of the red man - yourself."

Thomas Cushing was a historical writer associated with the New York City publishing firm of W.W. Munsell & Company.
William Pryor Letchworth (1823-1910) was a successful business man who purchased a 1000 acre estate near Rochester, New York.
Letchworth had good relations with the neighboring Seneca Indians and he bequeathed his land to New York State in 1906. It
is now known as Letchworth State Park. The Glen Iris Inn, located in the park, is the former country estate home of Letchworth.
